IELTS GENERAL TRAINING AND IELTS ACADEMIC

There are 2 different IELTS exams: The IELTS General Training and The IELTS Academic.

The IELTS General Training exam is taken by candidates when they wish to show a general level of English and is needed to work in an English-speaking country. 

The IELTS Academic exam is taken by candidates who are either undergraduate or postgraduate level or would like to work in a professional organisation in an English-speaking country.

Candidates of any level can take either IELTS exams. The candidate will receive a mark between 1 and 9 reflecting the level of English that they have. An A2 level is equivalent to a 2 score and a C2 level is a 9 score. The exams can be taken on paper, on a computer or online.

 Both exams consist of 4 papers: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. 

Both the Speaking and Listening Exams are the same for the General Training and the Academic Exams.

The Reading and the Writing Exams are different depending on whether the candidate is taking the General Training or the Academic Exams.

The duration of the exam is as follows:

Reading: 1 hour

Writing: 1 hour

Listening: 30 minutes

Speaking: 14 minutes
